BIKE SHOP PROJECT

BIKE SHOP WALL INSTALLATION IN ATHENS

At a central square in Ilion, a bike shop’s storefront extends beyond the building’s facade to the vertical wall of the parterre. Deconstructing the concept of bike, we decided to repurpose recyclable bicycle parts such as rims, chains, 6-speed cassettes, discs and pedals. Against a deep yellow background, we reconnected the components anew in a single succession through chains. Fastening all these bike components together required exceptional precision in measurement and installation. First we screwed the rims and then we linked them to the chains.

The whole system had to work as a machine and produce movement and sound. The “eye” is the starting point of this composition and also the motive power of the machine which works with an electric motor. The wall features suggested bike routes, and information about the respective distances, speed and duration.
